deHavilland DH.106 Comet 4 Inaugural Service 1958
The race to bring jet-powered passenger aircraft to the world’s airlines climaxed in 1958. Following the disasters of the deHavilland Comet development in 1952 it took another six years for viable jets to be introduced. Boeing introduced the 707, Douglas the DC-8, while deHavilland relaunched its contender as the Comet 4.
A rush developed to be the first jet airliner on the prestigious trans-Atlantic route with deHavilland desperate to win. In this scene the air and ground crews of the inaugural BOAC Comet 4 service pose with their Comet 4 at London Heathrow Airport. On 4 October 1958 they departed for New York Idlewild Airport beating the Boeing 707 by just two weeks.
