Ansett-ANA
Lockheed L.188 Electra at Burbank

The first Ansett-ANA Electra prepares to depart Lockheed Burbank in California in 1959 for the delivery flight to Australia. The Electra was at the centre of a bitter dispute between Ansett-ANA and Trans-Australia Airlines (TAA). Following the creation of the Two Airlines Agreement the Commonwealth government refused TAA permission to buy Sud Caravelle pure jet aircraft, insisting instead that it acquired Electras, which was Ansett-ANA’s choice. The decision denied Australians pure jet travel for five years, until the Boeing 727 was introduced in 1964.
