Short S.23 C Class Empire Flying Boat
Rose Bay, Sydney 1938
Rose Bay, an upmarket residential suburb of inner Sydney was chosen as the site for the city’s new Flying Boat Base to begin operations in 1938. It was the terminus of the Australia-UK flying boat route. Maintenance facilities and a passenger lounge were constructed, although not all of them before the first of the Empire Flying Boats began arriving. The nine-day flight from one end of the world to the other set a new standard for passenger comfort. The flying boat trip was far faster than the five weeks it took express mail ships to cover the distance. It was also a lot more expensive than going by ship. The Short S.23 was operated by Qantas Empire Airways and Imperial Airways (later BOAC) in a partnership arrangement.
