British European Airways – BEA
Airspeed AS.57 Ambassador ‘Elizabethan’
Only 23 Ambassadors were built by Airspeed, the majority going to British European Airways (BEA) for their short-to-medium routes within Europe. Although designed for post-war conditions, the piston-engined aircraft was doomed to fail once the superior turboprop Vickers Viscount came on the market. BEA named its Ambassadors after prominent identities of the era of Queen Elizabeth I. Three of the type operated for a short time with Butler Air Transport in Australia.
