Boeing Commercial Airplanes
747 Rollout Ceremony 1968
On 30 September 1968, at its new Everett plant, Boeing unveiled its new 747, the latest and most ambitious project in the company’s history. While the 747 would go on to revolutionize global travel, at the time there were many well-founded doubts among the world’s airlines. Most global carriers were happy with their DC-8s and 707s but few wanted to risk being left behind if the public took the ‘jumbo jet’ to its heart. In the 747’s first years its operators did lose a lot of money and some disposed of their aircraft but most persisted until they became economical. On this day in 1968 the massive new aircraft was posed with (female) flight attendants from each of the carriers that had placed orders.
