Cathay Pacific Airways
Lockheed L.1011-1 TriStar
Cathay Pacific came under considerable pressure from the British government to purchase TriStars in the 1970s because they were fitted with British-made Rolls-Royce engines. At the time Rolls-Royce was in deep economic troubles and Britain could not afford to have a major technology manufacturer collapse. Similarly, Lockheed needed all the help it could get to remain a major passenger aircraft builder. In the end the TriStars proved to be a viable performer particularly on Cathay’s Asian routes.
