Convair Division of General Dynamics
Convair 880 Trade Advertisement
In the 1950s Convair had achieved success with its range of twin-engined propeller airliners that fitted a niche in the shorter-haul market. In 1956 the company became much more ambitious, attempting to take on the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. Their idea was to create an airliner that was faster and slightly smaller than the big two had planned. It turned out to be a niche for which there was very little demand. Only 65 were ever built between 1959 and 1962, leading Convair’s parent, General Dynamics, to declare it a failure.
