Qantas Airways Advertisement 1970
‘Our Magnificent Men’ cabin crew
Until the 1980s the cabin crew on Qantas aircraft were largely male, known as ‘stewards’. Each aircraft carried at least one female ‘hostess’ since the 1940s when Douglas DC-4s and then Lockheed Constellations were introduced. With the Boeing 707 the female component rose to three. The male steward on a Qantas flight was a tradition dating back to the late 1930s with the flying boat services between Australia and the UK. This jokey advertisement was published in the Walkabout travel magazine in 1970. .
