In the early days of flying boat operations in Australia Qantas S.23s made numerous test landings on open water sites to build up knowledge of emergency landing areas. The Broadwater, in what is today known as the Gold Coast, was one such location. The arrival of one of the ‘giant’ aircraft was also great for publicity.
