Nola Rose – The Face of TAA
When Ian Sabey, Publicity Manager for TAA, saw model Nola Rose in a fashion parade on Sydney’s Bondi Beach in the late 1940s he knew she would be ideal as the face of the airline. He commissioned the TAA advertising agency to prepare a painting of Nola Rose dressed in a TAA hostess’s summer uniform. He showed the finished work to TAA chairman Arthur Coles who declared it ‘too sexy’, refusing to allow its use. After the 1949 general election Coles was forced to resign by the new Menzies Liberal government enabling Sabey to launch the new face of TAA, an image that lasted through to the 1960s.
