TAA – Trans-Australia Airlines
Inaugural Service Arrives Sydney
Douglas DC-3 ‘Hawdon’
When the Chifley Labor government’s plan to nationalise all Australian airlines in 1945 was blocked by the Australian High Court, the government opted for a state-owned airline competing with private enterprise carriers. Trans-Australia Airlines (TAA) was allocated twelve Douglas DC-3s to establish a route network. In this image, one of the DC-3s, named ‘Hawdon’, has just arrived at Sydney’s Mascot Aerodrome on 9 September 1946 after the airline’s inaugural flight from Melbourne.
