Trans World Airlines – TWA
Lockheed L.1649 Starliner
In flight over New York 1957
The Starliner was the ultimate development of the illustrious Constellation line. It was intended as a competitor for the Douglas DC-7C with the capacity to fly the longest trans-Atlantic routes, although weather conditions sometime necessitated technical stops. There were 44 Starliners built, mostly operated by TWA. Their history on these mainline services was short with 707 and DC-8 jets displacing them by the early 1960s. This Starliner is flying over New York City, a favourite background for many airline publicity photographs.
