TWA – Trans World Airline
Lockheed L.49 Constellation in flight
The L.049 Constellation was developed by Lockheed in the latter days of World War II. The design was inextricably linked with the requirements laid down by Howard Hughes, eccentric businessman and major shareholder in TWA. The first Constellation was delivered to the airline on 1 October 1945. It began domestic services that year and entered international routes in February 1946. The uniquely styled Constellation quickly became a favourite of operators and passengers. The latter were particularly impressed with the pressurization system which made for a far more comfortable flying experience.
