Butler Air Transport
Founder Arthur Butler with Douglas DC-3

Arthur Butler was one of the pioneers of civil aviation in Australia establishing Butler Air Transport and Queensland Airlines. BAT operated primarily in New South Wales before extending services into Queensland and Victoria. To compete with TAA and ANA of trunk routes such as Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne he bought two Vickers 700 series Viscounts. BAT was partly owned by Australian National Airlines and also a large parcel of shares were in the hands of Butler’s employees. In 1958 Ansett moved to gain control of BAT making lucrative offers for his employees shares. Ansett also had the support of the Robert Menzies Liberal government. Butler was soon pushed out the airline he had founded which was renamed Airlines of New South Wales. The two Viscounts were transferred to the Ansett-ANA fleet.
