Guinea Airways was based in Adelaide, South Australia, however, until World War II its most lucrative business was in the Australian colonial territory of Papua New Guinea. In the 1920s Guinea pioneered the use of aircraft to carry cargo from coastal ports into the rugged highlands where fabulous gold resources had been discovered. In 30 minutes a cargo aircraft could travel the same distance that took a team of bearers would take seven days. In 1945 the Australian government banned Guinea from Papua New Guinea, restricting its business to intrastate services in South Australia.
