Avro Canada C102 Jetliner Prototype
The Avro Jetliner was an heroic attempt to put Canada’s aircraft industry at the forefront of jet-power, building on expertise acquired during World War II. The concept was for a medium-range passenger aircraft suitable initially for operation by Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA). There was intense interest from US operators who saw the Jetliner as ideal for shorter routes in the eastern states. Howard Hughes, majority shareholder in Trans World Airlines (TWA), made an offer to build it under license in the USA. The first prototype flew in 1949. At the time Avro Canada was working on its Canuck fighter which the government came to see as the more important development. In 1951 Avro was ordered to cease work on the Jetliner and divert all its efforts to the Canuck. The first Jetliner prototype and a second one under construction, were cut up for scrap.
