United Airlines
McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 in flight

United Airlines began flying the DC-10 in August 1970, the second (after American) airline to put the McDonnell Douglas wide-bodied airliner into service. The early years of the DC-10 were marred by fatal crashes attributed to design flaws. United flight 232, Denver-Chicago, crashed  on 19 July 1989 with the loss of 111 lives. The DC-10 eventually overcame its early problems and became a reliable performer, however, its image was forever tainted. United continued to fly them until 1998, the latter years as freighters.
