Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane
Aerial View 1932
Archerfield Aerodrome was established on former farmland south-west of Brisbane in the immediate post-World War I years. One of the first operators was Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services (QANTAS) when its outback routes were extended to the coast. Other operators were Airlines of Australia and Australian National Airways. Archerfield functioned as Brisbane’s main airport until 1949 when operations transferred to the former US military base at Eagle Farm. It remains the main light aircraft airport for Brisbane and the 1930s art deco control tower and terminal is still in use.
