British Airways
BAC/Aerospatiale Concorde
Supersonic Concorde was a revolutionary aircraft in many ways. The project was launched as a demonstration of Anglo-French technological cooperationand many of the world’s airlines placed orders for Concorde especially when it became clear there would be no US supersonic transport (SST). The Concorde project was plagued with developmental problems and costs rocketed to unsustainable levels. One-by-one the airlines cancelled their orders as it became clear Concorde would never be cost effective in day-to-day operation. In the end it was left to the two state-owned airlines – British Airways and Air France – to accept a small number of Concordes. Eventually the aircraft found a niche on trans-Atlantic services once it had been banned from many major airports and air routes because of noise.
