BCPA – British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines
Douglas DC-6
Management and staff from BCPA inspect the company’s new Douglas DC-6 during the delivery ceremony at the Douglas plant. This aircraft and three others were destined to fly BCPA’s Sydney-Auckland-Nadi-Canton Island-Honolulu-San Francisco-Vancouver route across the Pacific.
BCPA was a partnership of the Australian, New Zealand and British governments. Canada declined to join the consortium, allocating the route to Canadian Pacific instead. BCPA’s main competitor on the route was Pan American.
In 1954 the BCPA route was handed to Qantas and the three DC-6s (one had crashed on approach to San Francisco) went to Tasman Empire Airways (TEAL).
