Qantas reluctantly began upgrading from its Boeing 707-338C fleet in the early 1970s. Once again it was essential to compete with Pan Am on the trans-Pacific routes. after a period of difficult economics the 747 proved an immense success reaching a stage when Qantas had an all-747 fleet (for a short time).
