BCPA – British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines
Final service, Sydney 1954

Aircrew members pose with one of British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines’ Douglas DC-6s prior to departure of the carrier’s last Sydney-Auckland-Nadi-Canton Island-Honolulu-San Francisco-Vancouver service across the Pacific.

BCPA was a partnership of the Australian, New Zealand and British governments. Canada declined to join the consortium, allocating the route to Canadian Pacific instead. BCPA’s main competitor on the route was Pan American.

Operating economics of such a small airline led the consortium to close it down and turn the route over to Qantas with its Lockheed Super Constellations. Three DC-6s (originally four, one had crashed on approach to San Francisco) went to Tasman Empire Airways (TEAL).
