Eastern Air Lines
Lockheed L.188 Electra
Eastern was the first airline to put the Electra into service, in January 1959. It was the first American turboprop and industry acceptance was strong and orders flowed into Lockheed. Then two crashes forced a grounding and subsequently operational restrictions while aircraft were modified to fix the problem. Orders were cancelled and no more Electras were built. It went on to prove itself highly reliable operating successfully with many airlines including Qantas, TEAL, Ansett-ANA, TAA, KLM and Cathay Pacific.
