Robert Menzies ‘I Did But See Her Passing By…’
Speech to Queen Elizabeth II
Parliament House, Canberra, 18 February 1963
Queen Elizabeth II made her second visit to Australia in February 1963, primarily to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Canberra. Prime Minister Menzies took everyone, including the Queen, by surprise when he included the words ‘I did but see her passing by, and yet I love her till I die,’ in his speech of welcome. To many it was seen as a genuine display of the affection he felt for her; to others it was a cringeworthy embarassment.
