Trans-Australia Airlines – TAA
Douglas DC-3 in 1960s livery
The DC-3 was the first aircraft operated by TAA when is was founded in 1946, remaining part of the fleet until 1973. This aircraft was originally built as a US military C-47 for service in World War II. Its first service with TAA was on the main interstate routes but it was soon relegated to lesser roles. In its last days it flew short sectors in outback Queensland. As DC-3s were designed for 800 kilometre flights the 200-300 kilometre outback services required operational subsidies from the Commonwealth government.
