TWA – Trans World Airline Douglas DC-4
Inaugural service to Rome arrives, 1946
In 1946 Trans World Airlines was locked in a battle with Pan Am to establish supremacy on the North Atlantic. The US carriers had the advantage of an infrastructure not completely destroyed by war as the European countries had been. TWA used the Douglas DC-4 on the New York-Rome service. It was not the ideal aircraft for such a service, however, it proved a reliable performer until the DC-6 and Constellation became available.
