Sud Aviation SE.210 Caravelle

The French Caravelle was developed in the 1950s for shorter-range services, particularly in Europe. It used a number of technical and design features of the deHavilland DH.106 Comet and pioneered the concept of engines mounted on the rear end of the fuselage which was adopted by Boeing and Douglas. Despite reluctance to buy a foreign-built aircraft, United placed an order for twenty Carvelles, putting them into service in 1961.
