BOAC – British Overseas Airways Corporation
deHavilland DH.106 Comet

Also known as the Comet 1, this was the first pure jet passenger aircraft, a triumph for the British aviation industry when it began flying scheduled routes in 1952. The glow lasted a very short time as Comets inexplicably began crashing, forcing their withdrawal from operations and the cancelling of orders from airlines around the world. Engineers finally traced the problem to metal fatigue. From this was developed the Comet 4 which went into service in 1958 at much the same time as the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8
