Australian National Airways – ANA
Douglas DC-3 at Mitchell River
In the 1950s ANA and TAA flew outback services in Queensland carrying passengers and cargo from Brisbane to isolated settlements, mission stations and cattle and sheep stations. These flights were basically a public service exercise heavily subsidised by the Commonwealth government. The rugged DC-3 was used on most of the routes with a dozen or more stops in the course of a day’s flying. The DC-3 had been designed to operate profitably on 800 kilometre stages, not the 100-200 kilometres of the outback services. This ANA DC-3 is greeted by the locals at Mitchell River Mission in far-northern Queensland in the mid-1950s.
