Pan Am (Pan American)
Lockheed L.1011-500 TriStar
Pan Am’s order for Lockheed Tristars was seen as a major plus, however, other airlines did not follow this lead in the way they had with the DC-8, 707 and 747. Lockheed’s program was struck a further blow when Rolls-Royce, manufacturers of the TriStar’s engines, went bankrupt. The TriStar was saved by a substantial aid package approved by the US Congress. The new aircraft went into service in 1972 and flew with Pan Am until its collapse in 1991.
