Qantas Empire Airways
Lockheed L.749 Constellation with Speedpak cargo container
The L.749 Constellation was Qantas’s first modern aircraft in the early post-war years. These American aircraft were purchased despite intense political pressure to order British aircraft such as the Avro Tudor. Qantas management stood their ground and were supported by Prime Minister Ben Chifley. The Constellation which entered service in 1948 proved less than reliable with constant engine problems, however, they did pave the way for Qantas to order the far superior L.1049 Super Constellation for delivery in 1954. The aircraft in this image is fitted with the Speedpak container which enhanced the Constellation’s cargo capacity.
