Lockheed Aircraft Corporation
L.188 Electra in flight 1958
The L.188 Electra was the first major turboprop aircraft developed in the USA. Until this time Britain had led the way with this type of power. Launched in 1957, it carried its first paying passengers on 12 January 1959 with Eastern Air Lines. Lockheed achieved impressive sales at first, in the USA, Europe and Australia, however three crashes in 1959-60 ended this run of success. Aircraft were grounded then permitted to fly with severe speed restrictions until expensive modifications could be undertaken. In following years Electras flew without major problems, however, no more airline orders were received. Most ended their days as freighters.
