Qantas Airways
Boeing 747-SP38
One of the two Qantas 747-SPs departing Sydney in 1982. Qantas acquired the 747-SP to compete with Pan Am on the non-stop Sydney-Los Angeles route. At the time it was the only aircraft able to fly such a long route economically. The SP was a shortened version of the original 747-100 series designed specifically for long-range services. Qantas also used it on the less ideal Sydney-Wellington route.
